ATHENS — What began as dreams for the Kansas City Chiefs to win three consecutive Super Bowl championships, turned into nightmares as the Philadelphia Eagles crushed Kansas City 40-22 to win Super Bowl 59.
It is the second Super Bowl title for the Eagles and first for several former Georgia Bulldogs, including Nolan Smith, Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter, Lewis Cine, Kelee Ringo and Nakobe Dean.
Best known as “Philly Dawgs,” former Georgia national championship players Smith, Carter and Davis had a significant role in blowout win that was not as close as the final score may have led some to believe.
Following up their dominating 55-23 win over the Washington Commanders in the NFC Championship game, the Philadelphia defense had six sacks, two interceptions including one for a touchdown, a strip sack and recovery, 16 pressures and several hits against the Chiefs.
Davis tallied a sack of Mahomes and two tackles, while Smith and Carter each had two hits on Mahomes.
Another interception return touchdown off of Mahomes was negated by a defensive penalty.
Cine, Ringo and Dean did not have any stats.
The Eagles shut out the Chiefs 24-0 in the first half. The score was 40-6 at one point in the fourth quarter. Mahomes and the Chiefs were able to score two late touchdowns when the game was already decided and it did nothing.
Mahomes is now 3-2 in Super Bowls and has lost two Super Bowls by a combined 40 points. The Eagles are now 2-2 in Super Bowls.
Leading up to Super Bowl 59, few thought Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes would surpass Tom Brady as the greatest quarterback and player of all time. After Super Bowl 59, any premature “GOAT” debates have ended.
