WTMJ said that the Milwaukee Police Department, along with the Milwaukee Fire Department, are searching for a child and two adults who were swept away in a drainage ditch around 6:30 p.m. Monday. There was a strong current following heavy storms in the area.

During a press conference, authoritires said the child is about 11 years old and slipped into the drainage ditch that led into the Kinnickinnic River, according to WDJT. Two adults, ages 34 and 37, got into the river to try to help the child but got swept away too.

“It was swift water. If anybody knows about rapids, the water is fast. You can’t control your surroundings, makes it unsafe for anyone to venture in to do any search whatsoever because the water was moving so fast,” said Assistant Milwaukee Fire Chief DeWayne Smoots in a press conference, according to WDJT.

WITI said that search efforts were called off Monday evening due to dangerous conditions and darkness but officials will continue to search for the three on Tuesday.
