While James Bond may have had a license to kill, a California couple borrowing from the secret agent character’s arsenal of gadgetry with a license plate did not thrill authorities.
A tip from a resident about a car possibly linked to a burglary helped Irvine police discover a Mercedes-Benz equipped with a push-button, rotating license plate and other items, KNBC-TV reported.
“The suspect vehicle was something out of @007 movie,” the Irvine Police Department wrote in an Instagram post.
Yasmine Kambour, 37, and Chris Huynh, 44, both of Garden Grove, were arrested on suspicion of vehicle burglary, vehicle theft, identity theft, possession of stolen property and possession of burglary tools, according to KTLA-TV.
“In 19 years, I’ve never seen anything like this,” Irvine police Sgt. Karie Davies told the television station.
Officers also discovered an elaborate gas siphoning device that transferred fuel directly into the vehicle’s gas tank, Irvine police wrote on Instagram. The vehicle contained burglary tools, evidence of identity theft and stolen property. Officers also found remotes and key fobs that they believe were allowing the suspects to enter residential buildings, KTLA reported.
Because of the tip, detectives were able to recover a car previously stolen from Irvine, according to the television station.
Davies said Kambour and Huynh have been tied to six cases in Irvine and one in Newport Beach, KTLA reported. Police believe the suspects had entered parking garages and broke into vehicles, stealing at least one Chevrolet Camaro in one case, KNBC reported.
“I have no doubt that more people are going to come forward,” Davies told KTLA.
