Coronavirus: Costco extending senior hours indefinitely amid COVID-19 surges

Costco Wholesale Club will extend its senior shopping hours “until further notice” due to recent surges in novel coronavirus cases nationwide.

By early Sunday evening, the United Stated had confirmed a total of more than 14.7 million COVID-19 cases that have resulted in at least 282,231 deaths, according to a Johns Hopkins University tally.

According to Costco’s website, the special operating hours apply to anyone 60 years or older and to anyone with disabilities or immunocompromised.

The majority of locations observe the designated hour for senior, disabled and immunocompromised shoppers between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. Monday through Friday.

The dedicated senior hour was first offered March 24 on a twice weekly basis and then three times per week, but most clubs extended the offering to weekday mornings, USA Today reported.

Although Costco planned to discontinue the special hours for vulnerable shoppers in July, surging cases prompted the company to reverse course, Fox Business reported.

The membership club was among the early adopters of businesses mandating masks to be worn in all stores, and last month amended its policy to prohibit exemptions for shoppers claiming medical exemptions absolving them of wearing face coverings.
