  1. Take a commute alternative and take control over your commute while saving time and money. Don't sit in traffic everyday; carpool, vanpool, telework, take transit, bike or walk to work.

Carpool and share the costs of driving to work. Did you know if you drive alone to and from work in metro Atlanta, it's costing you upwards of $15 every day depending on gas prices, or over $330 each month?

Vanpool fees are usually much less than the cost of driving alone, and you can ride in the HOV lane. The Clean Air Campaign and area Employer Service Organizations offer a variety of financial incentives to help you earn money when vanpooling. You may also qualify for tax benefits.

Telework and you can increase productivity and reduce weekly commute-related costs. For example, teleworking just one day a week could save you an average of 72 hours every year.

Transit can save you a substantial amount of money, and you may find taking transit can be even less expensive if your employer or property manager offers passes through a discount program.

Bike or Walk to work and blend your workout into your workday. You can also free yourself from traffic by walking or biking for short trips around town.

For more information about the benefits of taking a commute alternative, visit The Clean Air Campaign Web site at www.cleanaircampaign.com/your_commute.

  2. Drive cleaner and greener. Simple every-day driving and maintenance activities can reduce environmental impacts and save fuel. Helpful actions include:
    • Keeping your tires properly inflated
    • Checking and replace air filters
    • Utilizing cruise control
Also, don't forget to think of fuel efficiency next time you buy a car. Visit www.fueleconomy.gov for more information about fuel-efficient cars, like hybrids!

  3. To better protect yourself, your family and your employees from the effects of air pollution, sign up to receive Smog Alerts. The Clean Air Campaign issues Smog Alerts on days when the concentrations of either ozone or particle pollution (or both) are expected to reach unhealthy levels. Sign up for Smog Alerts here.

  4. Try out Commuter Rewards, a Clean Air Campaign program that rewards metro Atlanta's commuters who carpool, vanpool, telework, take transit, bike or walk to work, with free prizes!
  • If you currently drive alone to work, Cash for Commuters rewards you $3 a day, up to $180, over a three-month period, for choosing a better way to work.
  • If you currently use a commute alternative, just keep doing what you're doing and win $25 gift cards through Commuter Prizes. One in 20 participants wins each month.
  • If you currently carpool, expand your carpool to three or more people and earn up to 12 $40 or $60 gas cards through Carpool Rewards.
