My Chemo Sabe Has a Cancer Recurrance
I have been really shaken the past couple of days. My dear friend, Susan, who has been on the front line of my cancer battle with me literally every day since I found my lump, has just found out she has a recurrance of her breast cancer. I just don't understand it.
Susan was originally diagnosed during the Blue Cross/Blue Shield and Piedmont Hospital debacle a few years ago. The insurance company and hospital couldn't come to an agreement, and Susan's diagnosis came within days of the deadline when Piedmont doctors would no longer accept BC/BS insurance. All of Susan's docs are a Piedmont. Of course, the businesses eventually reached an agreement, but my friend had to make life altering decisions in such a hurry it would make your head spin. Susan did so with such grace and courage. I am very proud of how she handled the situation, but I'm bitter to this day about the hoops she had to jump through during the most difficult time of her life.
Susan's cancer was in the very early stages, but because of how it was in her breast, her doc advised her to have a mastectomy. She didn't require chemo or radiation, but did decide on reconstruction and has been happy with the results. Recovery from a mastectomy with reconstruction is intense, but Susan has literally glowed with good health ever since.
That was all 3 years ago. Then 2 nights ago I got the call from Sus. She found a funny little spot, the docs figured it was probably nothing but (thankfully) extracted it right away... and found low grade cancer cells. I feel like someone knocked the wind out of me -- imagine how my friend feels. I'm going with Susan for her MRI on Monday.
Of course, I don't know why this is happening to my friend. She's already been through enough. It has nothing to do with her insurance company or the hospital -- she's always gotten the best care possible. It's not happening because Susan is or isn't doing something. As one of my docs said, "It's just s%&**y luck." I know Susan will be alright eventually --she's a strong woman with a wonderful support system who's devoted in her faith. But I still can't help wondering why...
I'm glad Susan doesn't mind me sharing her story with you. You've been such a source of strength for me, I would appreciate it so much if you would keep her in your prayers.
What others are saying
- SusanSusan, you're in my thoughts and prayers today and in the days following. I too had the mastectomy and reconstruction without chemo or radiation. I pray that God will keep his loving arms of strength wrapped around you in the days to come. Hang in there.
- Women in the Arts & Cancer.....I just got back from the Indie Grrls Festival in Mineral Bluff, GA. These women have banded together with Musicians and Comedians from around the US to raise money for Women's cancer research.
As a former board member and co-founder of Indie Laughs for Life, I know many of the performer's themselves are battling cancer. After losing two sisters and a third that is a cancer survivor, I've vowed to use my comedy to help these women help others with their fund raising efforts, and bring laughter to the ones that I can.
Comediennes Michelle Thomas and Shelly Ryan often join me and others for these events on the comedy side of the shows. They are both from the Atlanta area as well.
Prayers to your friend, and I hope she is with you for a long time. Many of my friends, including Indie Girls, I've lost over the years, but I'll never give up fighting with them side by side to find a cure one day.

www.spottedkivaproductions.com - SusanI am praying for you, Susan! I would like to share a positive story regarding a recurrence. In her early forties, my maternal grandmother also had a mastectomy with no chemo or radiation. She later had a recurrence on her other side. She just turned 88 last month! I hope this will make Susan feel better and I am so glad these were low grade and sounds like it was caught early!! I will keep Susan, you and everyone else in my prayers. Stay strong, Susan!! Much Love, brooke
