Am I Being Silly? What Would You Do?

Ok, as I've been expounding on the benefits of having no hair I've come across a situation I'm feeling funny about. I've had two very good friends (one guy, one gal) ask if they could see my bald head (I'm actually chuckling as I'm writing this because it sounds so silly.) My knee-jerk reaction was to say, "Hell no!" But I'm wondering what's making me say that, since I'm being pretty open about what's happening to me and my body. My friends aren't asking in an obnoxious way -- they are just curious, which I can understand. So, I'm now curious. Do you think you'd be comfortable showing your naked-headed self to your friends?

What others are saying

  • No Hair
I have thinning hair (heretitary)and I don't have to look at it all day, only everyone else has to. Ha. But It is who you are not what you look like who makes you who people want to be around. Only the SHALLOW ( sadly the majority ) are concerned with looks. Yes I would show you my bald head.
  • Bald is Beautiful!!
That was the caption I typed beneath a picture that I took of myself after I shaved my head during my first round of chemo, back in early 2007.

Don’t worry, Kaedy-- you're not being silly! I think it's natural to feel nervous about revealing your baldness because society has always seen women's hair as a sign of femininity. However, in instances like these, you have to cut yourself some slack and do only what you feel like doing. Personally, I think of it this way... Your lack of hair is symbolic of your resilience, and a testament to the brave fight you're putting up against the disease! Hang in there, girl! You'll get through it!
  • Gotta LOVE me all...
I was brought up to not judge people for the look they carry, but the heart they are sharing and 'you' I take it have a great loving heart.
  • Am I being silly?
I have to agree that it probably varies by individuals. Some people are modest, some are exhibitionists, so this reaction can't be the same for every person. I miss you.
  • Cancer
Hang in there. I am fighting cancer at the same time that you are and I'm positive we CAN BEAT this nasty invader.
  • bald head
Hey- I think I might be the gal friend that asked to see Kaedy's bald head. My exact comment was " I can't wait to see your smiling face and bald head!!" I meant it as a "package" deal-even though she has a bald head she still has a smiling face!I'll take just the smiling face though....
  • Not silly.
That be a "luv ya, but hell to the No -
If ya wanna see the Ga. Dome, you gots to pay admission". Gotta laugh. Hang in brave heart! Hairs to YOU!
  • Are you being silly?
No, you are not being silly. Because you are being so open about, it is ok that they ask. You can still say no. They should be mature enough to accept that. They are supposed to your friends after all. If think about it, most people have a pretty good idea of whats going on beneath our clothes, but we don't show them that.
  • if you feel like it show it
I don't mean it in a bad way. i guess my friend would respect me whether i was bald or with hair. because you are beautiful inside and out. it really doesn't change who you are. with hair or without. i would show it and be proud. that's just me....
  • SHOWING BALD HEAD
It really boils down to how comfortable you are with it.

I've been asked to see the mastectomy/reconstruction of my left breast. Obviously, I only show females and in private. It's a body part. It becomes something that is a part of you but it isn't. I figure if it will help someone feel more comfortable about their decision ahead of them, I'll help in any way I can.

For my MOM, it was a way to make her see her little girl was "ok" and that it does look "almost" normal. I tease people who don't know and ask them if they can tell which one is live and which one is memorex!

I love the Blog Kaedy, I'm learning things too! Hang in there!
  • Am I being silly?
Kaedy: I just started reading your blog. I think that it is entirely up to you. Obviously on some level you are not comfortable with the hair loss. If you are out in public with the wig, the public doesn't KNOW you like your family and friends KNOW you. Maybe you think (subconsciously) that a bald you would somehow change how family and close friends "see" you or treat you. The old saying of "this is when you find out who your friends are" comes to mind. Take things at your own pace. It would be horrific to you for you to "bear all" and quite possibly see even a glimmer of something change in the faces of your loved ones. It is completely your call. Your decision. Your comfort level is what matters most.
