Accessorize, Baby!
I went to the barn in Rockmart this weekend to spend some time with my horse. She's retired -- 28 years old and, basically, just a big puppy that loves carrots! Summertime at the barn is my least favorite time of year -- it's hotter than ever with flies and HORSEFLIES -- ugh! I sure as heck wasn't wearing Bridgette! The perfect accessory? My bad-ass lavendar bandana. It looks like the typical bandana BUT it's got a soft insert that you just put on your head, then the bandana falls perfectly and you tie it however you want.
I had some friends coming over for dinner, margaritas, and WII last night. They showed up 5 minutes early when I was putting the finishing touches on the make-up, but had no hair going. I looked over and perched on my make-up mirror was the perfect thing to grab -- "Hattie," my baseball cap with half of a blond wig velcroed into the band! Threw it on before the doorbell even rang twice.
I know there are catalogues you'll find at your doc's office and places online you can order accessories, but I found mine where I got my wig -- "A Woman's Place" boutique at Northside Hospital -- worth a trip if it's anywhere near you. There are usually stores in hospitals like it that have the cute headgear. I made a good time out of picking mine out with my niece and friend -- I also got a fuzzy cap to sleep in when I get cold (which, in this Atlanta summer, hasn't happened yet,) and a couple of other cute, colorful caps. Everything I picked out was under $25, except for "Hattie" which was $50, but so worth it! If you're feeling very adventurous, you could get your own Hattie with long, curly, dark locks -- or go red! My mom is a whiz at sewing and she took a few of my favorite baseball caps and sewed some velcro into them so I can change up the baseball caps too. Hard to believe that this is actually FUN stuff!
What others are saying
- You go, Brooke!!Brooke, you're a very brave lady -- going through what you are while being a mom to two little ones must be incredibly hard, yet motivating! You know you are in my prayers, and I believe everyone that reads what you've written below will have you in theirs as well. Kick ass on Wednesday, Brooke -- I'll be thinking of you. Maybe "Brandi" and "Bridgette" can have lunch one day soon to compare notes!
- Wigs and tipsHi Kaedy! As you know, I am 33 and just behind you on the chemo train--I have my first one this Wednesday. I was shocked to hear the words "there was some cancer in there" from my doctor. What we all, my doctors included, thought was a fibroadenoma was actually a cancerous tumor. I have had time to digest and make decisions regarding my surgery and other treatment (chemo and radiation). Your blog has been such a huge help to me (and I am sure to others). After my oncotype score came back intermediate, I wanted to stick with my gut reaction to go with chemo. I have long hair and my biggest fear has been my hair loss and how my two children (ages 4 and 2) will handle this. After a long vacation, we arrived home last night and I hit the ground running today. I ordered a wig that the catalog calls "Brandi" and I have an appointment at "A Woman's Place" later this week. I feel so much more comfortable about this now that I have tried on some wigs, had a little fun with the hats, etc. Your tips are so helpful and a good attitude and humor will take one a long way. As for the bald question, I feel very concerned about how I will look and don't know how I will be able to walk around my house so I don't blame you--it is personal and we should just do what makes us comfortable! My final 2 cents for anyone going through any scare is to get checked and ask for a biopsy if you are still concerned. Also, for anyone with a friend or family member dealing with this--if you don't know what to say to someone, just give them a hug! One of my dear friends called and said, "Brooke, I got your back, girl!" That message was all she needed to say and made me smile. Kaedy, thank you for being an inspiration!!
- Good Wig Tip....That's something I had forgotten about. Often it's more cost effective and fun to pick up wigs and tips from the Hospital and Gift stores on site.
They are good with accessories and tricks to make you look like you have hair.
Kaede thanks again for sharing your story with others. I'll be at Jonica Gap Campground in Mineral Bluff, GA this Friday and Saturday.
