A Friday of Chemo and Comedy
Crazy day yesterday! I started my first round of chemo at 2 p.m. I was very relaxed with my Mom and brother Mark hanging out with me. My nurse, Terry, started my IV with medicine to prevent nausea, then some saline and the first of two bags of different chemo medicine, which was to take about an hour. I was in the middle of answering a friend's text when my throat started feeling pressure, then my chest, then all the way down to my tailbone. For a minute, I thought I was having a panic attack-indigestion-hot flash but it turned out I was having an allergic reaction to the medication. So Terry shut it down, hooked me up to a bag of Benedril, then we continued going MUCH more slowly with the drip to make sure I could handle the same medicine. It worked like a charm -- no more reaction, but it took a lot longer than originally planned, and I had a big event to get to by 7. I had 15 minutes to get ready for, what turned out to be, one of the most memorable nights of my life!
My "Project Wednesday" buddies (an eclectic group I've spent most Wednesday nights with for several years now for dinner, great laughs, and VERY stimulating conversation) threw quite the reception in my honor before a performance of "A Sunday Afternoon at Loehmann's," a new comedy written by two of my "Project" friends, John Gibson and Anthony Morris. Several other women of Atlanta radio were invited to be guest hosts -- my dear friends Mara Davis, Jordan Graye, and Vikki Locke, and my newer radio gal-pals Cynthia Young, and Melissa Carter -- ALL extraordinarily talented women whom I admire tremendously. John was absolutely hilarious onstage introducing all of us and eliciting laughter from the audience at my expense. One of my favorites -- "When Kaedy told us she had breast cancer I thought, 'Oh crap! She's gonna make us walk for 3 days!' So I thought we'd beat her to the punch and throw her this night instead." I was touched by having so many wonderful people together in one spot -- such powerful support from family, old friends, new friends, friends from work, a growing sorority of survivors I'm meeting, and some of my precious listeners. Thanks to everyone who helped make the sold-out event last night a great evening for The Georgia Breast Cancer Coalition, too -- John and Anthony were so generous to donate 100% of the proceeds to this fine group who lobby for more research. Thanks to The Fox Theatre, Live Nation, The American Boot Camp Company, Lakewood Amphitheater, 790 The Zone, and The New 97.1 The River and B98.5 Promotion Director Extraordinaire Dave Clapper for donating wonderful auction items. A big thank you, too, to the folks at The Ansley Park Playhouse and the fabulous cast of "A Sunday Afternoon at Loehmann's." The show is great, adult comedy -- check it out at ansleyparkplayhouse.com.
What others are saying
- God Bless YOUSo glad I can finally let you know I am praying for you and the doctors, etc. who will get you well for us here in Atlanta. You have always been a special "voice" to me, and will continue to be so. PLEASE let me know if there's anything I can do for you. I would do it, if possible, in a heartbeat. Any friend of Lloyd's was definitely a friend of mine. Love you girl.
- FantasticMy mom is doing great! I got a text from my dad at school saying that everything went perfectly and she was due to come home soon. I was so excited. I got many of my close friends to wear pink to support her. After I was done with finals I thought it would be nice to write a poem for her to make her smile, and she did. :) I will do my best to hug her gently for you :D
<3,
Paige - Paige -- how's your Mom?Paige, you and your brothers must make your mom so proud! It isn't often that I hear from someone your age with such a positive outlook about something that is very scary. How did Mom's surgery go today? Will you give her a big hug from me, and please keep in touch?
Love,
Kaedy - Keep going strong =]August 7th of last year my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. I am sixteen and have a twin brother along with an older brother who is 18. Ever since my mom was diagnosed we knew we had to stay positive, or else everything would be a whole lot worse. Tomorrow she has her second surgery and so far she is doing absolutly phenomenal. I love my mother and am so proud of how strong she has been. I also will be walking the 3 day in october hopefully right along side my mother to support her and everyone else out there, including you. :) Never forget to smile.
- Hope is always thereWant to wish you best luck and prayers. I'm a CA transplant, love thee station because it reminds me of home! I'm about to start a 6 month stint of Hep C treatments ( transfusion after birth of my son, darn that bad blood) so I understand! The cure is almost as bad as the disease in both cases. I'll be walking the 3 day in October (hopefully, if the treatment lets me) with you in mind!
- Thank YouThere are so many people going through this and it is great for you to share your experiences as a "public" figure. Sometimes it is not so lonely when you hear someone else is going through it and shares the same emotions you share.
Thank you for your courage and for sharing your personal journey with cancer.
I have had a scare but ended up just a cyst, but I just went through prostate cancer with my husband. No one really knows how much the word "cancer" can change your life and the loved ones around you!
God bless you and keep strong!
